#OTD in 1927, Constance Markievicz died. One of the most well-known and influential of Irish revolutionaries, she took part in major events from the cultural revival to the Easter Rising and more besides. To learn more about how her life shaped Ireland, visit the GPO Museum.

Countess Markievicz died #OTD, 15 July 1927, in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital in Dublin. We recently unveiled a special display about her which centres on her War of Independence prayer book which she transformed into a memorial to her fallen comrades during her imprisonment.

Henry Joy McCracken was executed #OTD, 17 July 1798, for his role in leading the United Irishmen in the 1798 Rebellion. He had previously spent nearly a year as a prisoner in Kilmainham Gaol between October 1796 and December 1797. 1/2

#OnThisDay 1798 Henry Joy McCracken, a Presbyterian, industrialist, one of the founding members of the United Irishmen & leader of the 1798 Rebellion in Antrim was hanged in Belfast. McCracken was offered clemency for the names of other leaders but he refused. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1884 Louise Gavan Duffy was born in France. A suffragist, nationalist, scholar, member of Cumann na mBan, & was present in the GPO till the evacuation during the Easter Rising. Duffy also established the first Gaelscoil in Ireland in 1917. #Ireland #History

The revolutionary and politician Cathal Brugha was born #OTD, 18 July 1874. A veteran of the 1916 Rising, this clipping from The Irish Independent of 11 December 1918 shows him as the Sinn Féin candidate for Waterford in the momentous 1918 Election. 1/2

#OnThisDay 1874 Cathal Brugha was born in Dublin. Severely wounded in the Easter Rising, he survived & became Chief of Staff of the IRA from 1917-1919 & Minister of Defence 1919-1922. He opposed the Treaty & was fatally wounded in the Civil War. #Ireland #History

The famous advice for women given by Constance Markievicz was, "dress suitably in short shirts and strong boots, leave your jewels and gold wands in the bank and buy a revolver". #OnThisDay 1927 she was buried in #GlasnevinCemetery alongside many of her comrades. #IrishHistory

My Great grandfather Patrick Brennan was a member of the Fianna Padraig, a scout troop founded by Fr Paddy Flanagan "The Rebel Priest of Ringsend". At the outbreak of the Easter Rising Patrick offered his services to the officer in command of the Boland's Mill garrison.

OTD 1616 Hugh O'Neill, earl of Tyrone died in Rome 'after exemplary penance for his sins, and gaining victory over the world and the devil'. Tyrone was buried in San Pietro in Montorio. His funeral was attended by cardinals, ambassadors and foreign dignitaries #nineyearswar
