A common thing many trauma survivors find ourselves thinking is, "I wasn't supposed to live this long-- what now?"

You didn’t become cold. You became safe. A thread on trauma, nervous system shutdown, and how we lose access to warmth—not because we’re broken, but because we adapted to survive.

One reason why pets can be so powerfully healing for trauma survivors in recovery is, they demonstrate to us that love doesn't have to be "earned," conditional, or fraught. That we can both love & be loved, just because. That's a very, very new concept for many survivors.
