Another great thing with the ICOS Science Conference 22 #ICOS2022SC: Deepen the topics featured in FLUXES, the European Greenhouse Bulletin and meet some of the writers during the daily sessions! (Psst, get FLUXES icos-cp.eu/fluxes) ⏲️ A detailed 🧵 for Tue. 13.9 ⤵️

The opening speaker of #ICOS2022SC Gilles Erkens says the NL is losing peat volume bc erosion, burning or draining (which results in peat decomposition and loss of CO2.) Only a fraction of peat remains. Critical to protect this carbon storage etc.

Alexander Buzacott at #ICOS2022SC on methane emissions across Dutch peatlands. CH4 emissions from peat soils are influenced by several factors, such as water table depth, vegetation, peat type and climate. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (inactief)

Research from ICOS Switzerland Davos station and Lukas Hörtnagl: during a heatwave in 2019 the ecosystem abruptly changed from a strong carbon sink to a carbon source. Just a few hours of critical heat were sufficient to impact the annual carbon budget significantly #ICOS2022SC

These different CH4 dispersion models have big differences - especially about the division of the plume in two parts passed Norway, and the return flow southward. Some inter-comparison maybe ? We should learn about atmospheric transport models from this event CoCO2 Project

CAMS simulation of column-averaged CH4 from the Nord Stream leaks and comparison with ICOS RI observations at Hyltemossa. Initial estimate for source strength (2x 5000 tonnes CH4 per hour) seems too strong. ➡️Stay tuned for further updates!

Back to 'normal' methane concentration variability at ICOS stations. These measurements will make it possible to estimate the leak in the days to come.
