Hey, look who's in town ... why none other than the acclaimed US novelist Edward Matthews, author of the brilliant (and prescient) Border Memories - last few copies available from watermarkpress.co.uk But who is that old man?

A meeting of Watermark literary titans. But, quick quiz, can you tell which is the American and which is the Brit? There might be a clue in the teeth...

#amreading Morning and Evening by Jon Fosse. The first book I've read by the Nobel laureate: Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected, rewritten by Samuel Beckett with a strong Norwegian accent. Like pickled herring, an acquired taste, but unlike pickled herring, I'd like some more

#amreading The Ice Palace by Tarjei Vesaas (Penguin). I've never read anything like this stunning Norwegian novella: it's as clear and lucid as a fairy tale or fable, yet at the same time, it's endlessly enigmatic and strange. I can't recommend it highly enough.

"An entertaining story, pitched intriguingly ... there is much to be enjoyed in it by readers who take their speculative fiction with a historical twist" - Val Nolan on 'At Dawn, Two Nightingales' in Interzone 302

#amreading Days in the Caucasus by Banine (Pushkin). Beautifully written, bittersweet and stingingly funny memoir of early 20thC Azerbaijan, revolution, awful men, awful moustaches, communism, love. The flippant tone masks real feeling - recommended.
