This #WorldHumanitarianDay, as we mark 20 years since the bombing of the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, we pay tribute to all humanitarians who dedicate their careers to help those in need, #NoMatterWhat. Thank you UN Chronicle for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts:

Kofi Annan was a diplomat to the world, and a trusted confidant to those close to him. KA, as we knew him, was always there in times of trouble, offering kind words and wise counsel. We miss him and his wisdom. And his kindness. And, yes, his love for a peaceful world.

The noose around the civilian population in Gaza is tightening. How are 1.1 million people supposed to move across a densely populated warzone in less than 24 hours? I shudder to think what the humanitarian consequences of the evacuation order would be.

We're living in the worst of times.

I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies at the scale needed. Everyone must assume their responsibilities. This is a moment of truth. History will judge us all.

I strongly condemn an incident yesterday in which an aid convoy was fired upon while traveling from northern Gaza to Rafah.  The convoy was clearly marked and its movements were coordinated with the parties.  Attacks on humanitarian workers are unlawful. The conflict must stop.

Outraged by the killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza. All this talk about ceasefires, and still this war steals the best of us.
