Thoroughly understanding the nature of our current humanitarian crises is essential to progressing. Anne Charbord: "The starting point to any analysis and to actually start addressing any problem is to actually understand the problem." #ThePlaceToSpeak

Gender perspectives are essential globally, but remain neglected. Anne Charbord: "Despite the fact that gender based violence (GBV) can affect up to 70% of women in European, settings GBV programming is the least funded sector in coordinated humanitarian plans." #ThePlaceToSpeak

It was such an honour to moderate this session with Harlem Désir at PSIA Sciences Po. What a sobering assessment of the situation and clear eyed vision of the challenges ahead of us.

So glad to have been a part of this Handbook with my QUB School of Law colleague Cheryl Lawther. Anne Charbord and I wrote the chapter on counter terrorism and Transitional Justice. Relevant to all those thinking of applying #TJ to #CT.

A truly excellent and much needed reflection on the rights of women in conflict: protection against obstetric violence, a blind zone that must be addressed.

Extraordinary news: Yusuf Zahab, the Australian youth assumed dead by his family in NE Syria, is alive but still behind bars in a NE Syrian prison. Why was there no confirmation by Oz or NES authorities? sbs.com.au/news/dateline/

2/ I should say reportedly alive. But here he is on video and the family has confirmed it is he. Why have more than two years passed without any official confirmation of life? How many more children have gone missing in these prisons?

It is beyond words to see this Australian boy Yusuf Zahab alive in NE Syria. For his family who have suffered so much time to bring him home. No child should ever endure what this now young man has survived. sbs.com.au/news/dateline/

Important statement led by ⁊SiobhĂĄn Mullally (UN SR Trafficking in Persons)⁩ ⁊UN Human Rights⁩ on the fate and lack of protection of Shamima Begum, who remains arbitrarily detained in NE Syria as a child victim of trafficking. ohchr.org/en/press-relea

If indeed a Canadian repatriation flight will soon bring some Canadian children home from NE Syria, all Canadians, and mothers of Canadian children, must be on board. Justin Trudeau @MelanieJoly Dominic LeBlanc it is time to end this human rights travesty. ctvnews.ca/politics/a-mot

Human Rights Watch again identifying profound concerns about the fate of women and children from Trinidad and Tobago whose need for repatriation grows ever more urgent in Northeast Syria and Iraq.

Extraordinary reporting by an exceptional journalist, focused on the fate of Swiss men detained in conditions that meet the threshold for core crimes under international law.

“Ces hommes sont dans un piĂšge mortel, explique celui qui a visitĂ© les prisons kurdes Ă  l’étĂ© 2023. La question centrale est de savoir si c’est voulu, si c’est une dĂ©cision dĂ©libĂ©rĂ©e de mourir de faim & de ne pas soigner une population carcĂ©rale spĂ©cifique news.dayfr.com/local/3838019.

Hugely important acknowledgement and reminder by State Dept CT Bureau of the obligation of countries to repatriate their nationals from Northeast Syria. This issue may have slipped from the front pages but it remains a critical humanitarian and human rights crisis.

ECHR decision - Pietrzak and Bychawska-Siniarska & Others v. Poland on secret surveillance. I had forgotten the amicus intervention we made in this case & the oral arguments by ⁊Anne Charbord⁩. Delighted to read the decision (from May) today. A win. hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng?i=002-1433

If the US is not unequivocal on LOAC violations, it effectively deems the rule book redundant. That redundancy will be reflected back when other states & NSAs adopt these tactics. Hint: It is not the target’s status which defines the legality of the tactic but the tactic itself.

Devastated to hear this news of the death of FJ, a woman & her children I met in NE Syria in July 2023. On return to Geneva I met w: Canada Mission UN & issued a communication on the vulnerability & acute heath concerns I personally observed for FJ. Her death was needless & unnecessary.
