New: DOE Chancellor David Banks & his longtime partner, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright — whose home was raided by the feds this month — are getting married in Martha's Vineyard this weekend. Married couples can't be made to testify against each other. nydailynews.com/2024/09/28/nyc…

New: during a council hearing today, DOE officials named two companies the city's been using to pilot school bus cameras - a pilot now set to expand. The president of one of those companies was, until last September, chief of staff for Phil Banks: chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/0…

Concerning this is the second statement in a row with critical information about the leadership/management of the DOE not issued by DOE (last night's announcement came from city hall). We cover NYC schools every day + would love to write about this but don't even have a copy...

Will federal investigators wait for the paperback to get a glimpse of the copious notes Banks says he's taken of all his meetings?

The Post was also turned away from the Chancellor's farewell. When asked for a statement from NYC Public Schools -- on his last day and his expedited departure -- Nathaniel Styer said "I think everyone has given lots of comments on this." Politico and DN were also not invited.

In NYC's HS admissions, your "tier" - based on 7th grade GPA - is critical. Students who are Black, Latino, low-income, homeless, learning English, or have a disability, are far more likely to land in the lowest tiers. W/ graphics from K Petrin: chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/1…

One irony in all this: Adams ran on lengthening the school year & proposed mandatory summer classes Since taking office, the city has steadily added holidays and is up against a state requirement to have at least 180 days of school chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/1…

this was a problem at my Brooklyn polling place during early voting. The scanners kept spitting out our ballots and there was some minor confusion about how to handle it. Eventually our ballots were invalidated, we filled out new ones, and the scanners accepted them

New: NYC is offering to restart special education services for thousands of private school families who were denied them earlier this year The catch? They have to waive their right to sue the city w/ Michael Elsen-Rooney chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/1…

A few days after Homeland Security cleared way for immigration authorities to make arrests at schools, agents showed up at Hamline Elem in Chicago's Back of the Yards, a mostly Latino immigrant community that had recently distributed know your rights cards hamlinehawks.org/ourpages/auto/…

Sharing Reema Amin updated reporting: Secret Service agents, who are overseen by DHS but don't enforce immigration law, were who showed up at Hamline. "The fear, confusion, and conflicting accounts could be a preview of what’s to come" in weeks ahead chalkbeat.org/chicago/2025/0…
