Earlier this week, we said goodbye to the wonderful Dr Elise Watson, as she moves on to HCAatEdinburgh to begin her postdoc with The British Academy! Elise has been an invaluable part of the USTC since 2017 and we can't wait to see how her new endeavours develop! #hasteyeback

In this cartoon from around 1800, a writer's new translation of Horace is rejected by his publisher. Because it’s ‘too hot for long translations’, he explains, ‘nothing will go down but light summer reading, such as neat cool poems and little refreshing novels.’

Books are often thought of as victims of war, looted or burned in libraries. Watch Professor Andrew Pettegree FBA explore the role of books in wartime, and argue that books in fact are essential to the waging of war in our new 10-Minute Talk: bit.ly/4f3MAx3

For my international colleagues who are wondering what the heck is going in in the Netherlands: Dutch Academia is facing the largest budget cuts since the 1980s. Programs will disappear, work load will go up, students will be penalised. It's grim 1/x

"This was a land where books and reading were integral to the way society functioned, and how people thought of themselves. So it is all the more surprising that books have somehow been written out of the narrative of the Dutch Golden Age." - Andrew Pettegree
