These four pages were once part of a book of astronomy from #Roman-period Egypt, & would originally have been bound together with string into a book used to cast horoscopes. They record the movements of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, & Saturn over a 62 year period 🪐

Another highlight of the recent trip to Rome - finally seeing the Barberini mithraeum in person. A rare example of a painted tauroctony, which includes the signs of the Zodiac above Mithras’ head 🌞 🌚 🔪🐮 🐍 🐕 🦂 🌌

A vigorous scene of a skirmish between #Roman infantry & cavalry adorns the top of the Ribchester helmet, originally worn by an elite cavalryman. It was discovered in 1796 by a clogmaker's son, with a hoard, & is now on display in the British Museum. 👉britishmuseum.org/collection/obj…

Armbands & twisted braids of gleaming silver, found near aptly named Silverdale, Lancs. Among the greatest Viking-era hoards found in Britain, prob buried around 900 during unrest bw Danish settlers and local (Saxon) farmers. Found only in 2011. Lancashire Museums #FindsFriday
