These four pages were once part of a book of astronomy from #Roman-period Egypt, & would originally have been bound together with string into a book used to cast horoscopes. They record the movements of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, & Saturn over a 62 year period 🪐

Another highlight of the recent trip to Rome - finally seeing the Barberini mithraeum in person. A rare example of a painted tauroctony, which includes the signs of the Zodiac above Mithras’ head 🌞 🌚 🔪🐮 🐍 🐕 🦂 🌌

#MosaicMonday #Symbolism is very important in #Byzantine mosaics. In religious #mosaics, artists strived to create glittering, brightly coloured tesserae to create a feeling of awe and being in the presence of #God. Do you feel its power?

The timeless beauty of ancient glass. A c. 2,250 year-old glass bowl made from colourless glass with opaque yellow and translucent dark violet ‘reticella’ threads. Looks so modern! Eastern Mediterranean. Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart, Germany. 📷 my own #Archaeology

A vigorous scene of a skirmish between #Roman infantry & cavalry adorns the top of the Ribchester helmet, originally worn by an elite cavalryman. It was discovered in 1796 by a clogmaker's son, with a hoard, & is now on display in the British Museum. 👉britishmuseum.org/collection/obj…
