There is a long-standing tradition in fascist ideology of subordinating economic policy to what Carl Schmitt called "the political" or the power of the dictatorial leader of the movement to decide what most conduces to national supremacy—be it laissez faire or protectionism.

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated. The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

Economics is fundamentally political. Economics is shaped by ideologies, human values, competing interests, social norms, and political priorities. Be sceptical of economists who tell you that their field is 'objective', free from politics.

Have said this before but these analyses always exclude tuition fees, which are a de facto income tax for everyone but the richest graduates. My top rate of income tax is 55%, not 40%, and it will continue to be until I turn 55.

Economics PhDs really choose to spend the best years of their life being paid almost nothing to work 90 hour weeks in a windowless basement and then assume people exhibit rational behavior

New research on the World Bank. We explore the various ways the WB influences education policy implementation. By applying the 'global-local conditions of possibility' framework, we shed light on the complexities of policy design and the importance of contextual sensitivity.

Something I find super neat is that Singapore has a cooling-off period which is the day before election day until the close of the polls "to give voters some time to reflect rationally on issues raised during the election"

Newsflash: Most students attend colleges that aren’t “newsy” at all. Wonderful breakdown, James S Murphy. Another great reminder about the most important schools in America that serve most of our students. edreformnow.org/2025/05/06/six…
