I think Merlin Donald's notion of the External Memory Field and its capacity to be the extended working memory, gives us the best insight into Geary's BioSec learning. This is what schools do.

I don't know why authors & publishers don't use headings far more often. And make them pithy previews/summaries of the content. I know I benefit from writing my own (cog. effort & all that) but that's a poor excuse for not having better designed texts-for-learning.
