#OTD, May 5th, 1883, Josiah Henson passed away. He is buried in Dresden, Ontario. But before living in Dresden, he was in Essex County. In Amherstburg, Henson memorably captained the 2nd Essex Company of Coloured Volunteers stationed at Fort Malden in the Upper Canada Rebellion.

#OTD May 8, 1920 athlete Barbara Howard was born in Vancouver. At 17, Howard broke the British Empire record for the 100-yard dash, and at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney, Australia, she won the silver medal in the 440-yard relay and bronze in the 660-yard relay.

#OTD May 9, 1800, John Brown, abolitionist, freedom fighter, was born in Torrington, Connecticut. #DYK In 1858, Brown liberated a group of enslaved people from Missouri and helped guide them to freedom in Windsor? Some of their descendants remain in Windsor-Essex to this day.

#OTD, May 10, 1815, Henry Bibb was born enslaved in Kentucky. The freedom seeker became a noted journalist, orator, author, and abolitionist. Bibb and his wife Mary launched the Voice of the Fugitive newspaper in Sandwich in 1851 and led the Refugee Home Society. He died in 1854.

#OTD, May 11, 1925, Betty Simpson was born in Colchester South. With her husband Melvin "Mac" Simpson, Betty co-founded the North American Black Historical Museum, now known as the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. She passed away in 2014. We remember her with fondness and gratitude.

#OTD May 16, 1885, Dr. Sophia B. Jones became the first Black woman to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School and the first Black Canadian woman to earn a medical degree. Born in Chatham, Ont. in 1857, Jones had been denied access to the Toronto Medical School.

#OTD May 16, 1929, Spurgeon Garland Montague was born in Southfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. The first Black male teacher hired by the Windsor Board of Education, he became a consultant, implementing ESL programs in Windsor and contributing to Ontario's Black studies curriculum.

#OTD May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, sparking a global movement. In June, Windsor-Essex artist Monte Scott donated his painting A World United to the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, where it continues to be displayed in our visitors' centre.

Never forget: the Greenwood District of Tulsa was a thriving Black community with over 1,200 businesses, churches, and homes until May 31-June 1, 1921, when a white mob destroyed the community, burned homes, looted businesses, killed as many as 300, and left thousands homeless.

#OTD June 2, 1882, Albert Jackson began his training as Toronto’s first Black letter carrier—a role he held for 36 years. Hired as a letter carrier on May 12, 1882, then demoted to janitor due to racism, Jackson was reinstated due to the collective action of Black Torontonians.
