Been hard going for the recruits on day 3 today. Started with an early morning PT session, followed by pump theory and practical and finished with hose running. Great effort by all. Keep it going. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett


Day 4: The hard work continues! Pumps and ladders all day followed by preparation for the their first parade inspection and theory assessment tomorrow. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett


Week 1 completed with the R1/22 recruits. We've only done; Manual handling, legislation, H&S, pumps and primers, hydrant and water supplies, FRS act, main pump, LPP, 13.5m & 10.5m ladder, hose running, squad drills, knots and lines, PT, parade and assessment! R1/22 wk 2. Steep learning curve this week for the recruit with so many new skills still to learn on the yard and in the classroom. Expanding on from Wk1 today we had multiple work stations demonstrating the restricted ladder pitch and pump drills. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett

Reflection gives the recruits opportunity to pause amidst the chaos, untangle and sort through to their performance. This helps to develop critical thinking skills and, improve on future performance by analysing what they have learned and how far they have come. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service


R1/22: Excellent classroom today at Cadover Bridge, Dartmoor, for a pump relay exercise. This allows us to cover a number of topics: Hydraulics, Pumps and Pump operation, Open water working, Wildfire, Communication skills and teamwork. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett

Week 2 completed with R1/22 recruits. We've only done, Lifts and Escalators, Railways, Electricity, Hydraulics, Aircraft, Extinguishers and Wildfire alongside, continued development with their practical; open water pumping, restricted and over basement ladders. And it's the end of the Core Skills element for R1/22. A hard week of assessments which also included Salvage. Here the recruits are participating in an exercise we like to call Niagara Falls, where they try and divert water from a ruptured main. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett


Demonstrating the wide range of abilities required to be a modern day Firefighter, R1/22 this week moved into the technical skill sets with Working at Height and Water Rescue. Great off-site classrooms yet again! Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett

Training Exercise: R1/22 recruits will be carrying out High Rise training at Beckley Point, Plymouth today. A chance to set up/ practice Breathing Apparatus procedures, Sectorisation, Command Support and pumping, along with a lot of stair climbing.Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service John Noblett
