Live-Evil was released on this day in 1971, featuring 8 tracks. Half of the tracks are composites created from live recordings at Washington, D.C.’s Cellar Door club, with a relatively slimmed-down ensemble, and the other half are studio-born. What's your favorite track?

Farewell Jimmy, I was in Jamaica when “The Harder They Come" was in every cinema on the island. You could feel the pride and and the love for Jimmy everywhere. The sweetest voice, the sweetest soul. His music will live with us forever! Heartfelt condolences to his family! One

Fun Fact: “Family Affair” by Sly & The Family Stone hit #1 on the Hot 100 in 1971, making it the first song ever to top the chart using a drum machine instead of a live drummer.

Fun Fact: Steely Dan’s “Aja” took over a year to make and used nearly 40 top session players. Becker & Fagen’s perfectionism meant bringing in multiple musicians per part until the feel was right. The album cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (very high for the time)

On this day in 1971, the Montreux Casino burned down after someone fired a flare gun during a Frank Zappa concert — the moment that inspired Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”

There's a great documentary on West Coast jazz in the works—and I'm actively involved. But we're still raising funds. So please spread the word. Check out the trailer (which has more details). youtube.com/watch?v=gPdrl4…

If you haven’t heard it in awhile? Put on Eddie Floyd’s Knock On Wood. It is one of most satisfying interlocking guitar/bass riffs of all time . So much funkier than Wilson Pickett’s version! A Soul triumph for Steve Cropper & Donald “Duck” Dunn both

Funny how many expressions of members of the audience are tense & decidedly NOT grooving to the music. A half Black & White band, led by a Black man was confrontational in a Sundown Town time of active segregation. Booker T & The MGs were HEROIC. Just for serving up Green Onions
