My great-grandfather and namesake, Arjan Singh Kular. Born in 1899, he would serve in both WWI and WWII. His service in WWI was quite short, given his young age, and was constrained to the Mesopotamian theatre of the war against the Ottoman Empire.

#OTD, 1865, our literary advisor Sir Rudyard Kipling was born. He determined the famous ‘Known Unto God’ headstone inscription for unidentified casualties, as well as selecting ‘Their Name Liveth For Evermore’ for our Stone of Remembrance.

#OTD marks the 107th Anniversary of the end of the Gallipoli Campaign. The UK and Indian forces named on the Helles Memorial pictured died in operations throughout the peninsula, the Australians at Helles. There are also panels for those who were lost at sea.

Officers in the 23rd Sikh Pioneers, Lt-Col Robert Nicolas & Subadar-Major Bawa Singh both fought together in Tibet, NWF 1908 (Zakha Khel) & Aden, Egypt & Palestine during WW1. Their descendants would meet over a century later in Walthamstow Avtar Bahra !

Another Indian POW I’d like to know more about is 5433 Havildar Clerk Ganpatrao Tawde of the 5 Mahratta Light Infantry. 5 MLI had the largest single group of POWs in German hands in the war – around 1200 of them. No confirmed photo of him yet - this is Belgaum '43 National Army Museum

A group photograph of 1st Umed Infantry Kotah taken at Gurdaspur during first Indo Pak War. It was cmd by Lt Col Durjan Sal Singh. 2 companies of the unit were attached with now disbanded 4/11 Gorkha Rifles at Dera Baba Nanak. Unit moved to Dras just after the war. Adil Rana Chhina
