1/6 #CougarDay webinar began with welcome by SP Yadav, Head/Interim DG, IBCA. He highlighted the ecological & cultural importance of cougars & emphasized on strengthening the conservation measures such as habitat development, corridors identification etc. for cougars.

2/6 During the webinar, Mr. Brent Lyles, Executive Director Mountain Lion Fdn, highlighted three key challenges facing cougars: ➡️Myths & misconceptions ➡️Exploitation and persecution ➡️Human-wildlife coexistence He also discussed the impact of climate change on cougars.

3/6 Dr. @granadosAlys discussed optimising puma conservation in California and Patagonia. Since 2006, efforts to safeguard pumas have included: ➡️Creating habitat corridors ➡️Promoting coexistence with ranchers ➡️Responsible wildlife viewing practices, among others.

4/6 Dr. Seth Riley emphasized the need for increased habitat connectivity to maintain genetic diversity in cougars and prevent genetic defects. He also noted the uniqueness of having mountain lions in Los Angeles, one of the few mega-cities in the world to host #Cougars.

5/6 Mr. Soumitra Dasgupta, Director, Program, IBCA concluded the webinar by emphasizing the need of cougar conservation & securing cougar populations through collaborative action. He highlighted the importance of IBCA in Cougar & other #BigCats conservation around the world.

6/6 The webinar was successfully organised by IBCA team comprising of Mr. Aditya Bisht & Dr. Tamali Mondal & moderated by Dr. Kausik Banerjee, Lead Specialist IBCA, who facilitated engaging discussions. This contributed to a meaningful dialogue on puma conservation.

1/2 In the webinar organized by IBCA to celebrate #CougarDay on 12th June, Dr. Seth Riley highlighted the need of wildlife crossings on linear infrastructure like highways. This allows easy movement of wildlife including Cougars & promotes genetic diversity & healthy ecosystem.

In a positive sign for conservation efforts, the IUCN reclassified the Asiatic lion from endangered to vulnerable in 2024. The IUCN has also made changes in the binomial nomenclature. Previously called Panthera Leo Persica, they are now Panthera Leo Leo.
