PhD researchers across Ireland are protesting today because: "Among all Western European countries, Ireland has the highest avg. tuition fees, tied highest avg. rent costs, but is the only country where PhD researchers are paid less than minimum wage." #PGRsDeserveBetter

PhD researchers are protesting because stipends are set at the poverty line. Not even minimum wage. €18,500 a year. "EU-Average PhD researcher pay is €32,100, and in Nordic countries pay starts at €50,000 and progresses to €55,000 on a fixed four-year contract" Paul Murphy 🇵🇸

Current stipends for PhD researchers in Ireland just aren't enough. Ireland is ranked LAST GLOBALLY in terms of PhD Stipend to cost of living ratio, scoring 0.58. Meaning the current ANNUAL PhD stipend covers living costs for less than 7 months. Department of Further and Higher Education #PGRsDeserveBetter
