The DREF just released 103,484 CHF for early action in #Mozambique ahead of tropical storm #Chalane. 1,500 families will benefit from this anticipatory humanitarian action #ForecastbasedFinancing Cruz Vermelha de Moçambique IFRC Deutsches Rotes Kreuz
The model climate for hydromet flood forecasts changes with lead time. To escape from model land (cf Erica Thompson Leonard Smith) we have to correct for that. Working w/@rcclimate, Aklilu& Dr Andrea Ficchì have found that doing so improves the value for forecast-based action.
#AnticipatoryAction contributes to minimizing the impact of floods in Ethiopia. Simulation exercises of protocol are executed with the Ethiopian Red Cross Society in order to discover its effectiveness and improve the overall process. #DataSupport Read more: lnkd.in/gNQziKH
Happy to share a blog post on the simulation exercise for the flood early action protocol in Ethiopia developed by Ethiopian Red Cross Society @510global Climate Centre and others.
Spoke to BBC News (World) earlier today about #VirusVariantsVaccine #VaccineApartheid Inequity & Injustice. Thanks to Philippa Thomas for inviting me on. This is NOT the answer, we need Global Solidarity and we need it NOW!
Preprint of paper by Marleenlam online Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) and open for discussion. Esp. views from colleagues working on drought in Kenya or other dryland countries would be appreciated. Thanks! Alessia Matanó Rhoda Odongo Aklilu Marc van den Homberg @droughtNL
#AfricaDP23: “The potential of using AI in #AnticipatoryAction hinges on the abundance of high-quality data, but faces hurdles in obtaining it. Before using datasets for Anticipatory Action, it is imperative to examine any biases in AI algorithms.” - Aklilu, 510: The Netherlands Red Cross data & digital team

#AfricaDP23 has closed. 🌍 Our takeaway? We can only scale up the impact of #AnticipatoryAction by working together, with African countries & organizations in the lead. It was a pleasure for the 510: The Netherlands Red Cross data & digital team team to participate in various sessions & hear from valued partners!
We supported the Start Network team in their efforts to develop trigger levels for assessing tropical cyclone risk in the Philippines. 🌀As a result, Start Network was able to activate the disaster risk financing system for Typhoon Doksuri utilizing the 510 Trigger Model!
