⚠️ Spring tides this week, and combined with all the recent rain, we’re expecting high river levels on the tidal #Thames at high tide over the next seven days or so. Flood Alert to be updated daily. I’m back on Thursday so see for myself.

⚠️ I've updated the Flood Alert for the tidal #Thames from #Putney to #Teddington for a high tide this afternoon. May be slightly higher than yesterday. Expecting high tides each afternoon for the next few days.

#OnThisDay: in 1953, a large storm surge combined with a spring tide and flooded many parts of the east coast, claiming the lives of 307 people in England and 19 in Scotland. Central #London was only spared due to the major flooding in East Anglia, Essex and Canvey Island 👇.

🌞 Signs the 2024/25 flood season is drawing to a close. One final set of high spring tides at the end of March. So far, we've not had to close for flood defence purposes this season. Could be our first blank season since 2011/12.

The #ThamesBarrier is operating from around 09.40 this morning for the monthly test closure. Should be reopen to river traffic by 12.10.

#OnThisDay in 1984, Her Majesty the Queen formally opened London's 520m flood defence across the #Thames, although it had been operational for a couple of years previously. It has now protected #London from tidal flooding on 221 occasions.
