Wilderness is a place where clean water is protected. If you’re human, chances are you like clean water. Protecting clean freshwater sources involves ensuring the natural function of entire ecosystems, both above and below the ground. #Wilderness #Alaska

Wilderness is a place where ecosystems are whole and intact. The remote, undeveloped, and natural qualities of the Katmai Wilderness support complex and interwoven natural systems... and #FatBearWeek, of course. ow.ly/Y8cJ50NGjlB #Alaska #Wilderness

May is Wildfire Awareness Month! More than 85% of all wildfires are caused by humans, and most of these fires can be prevented. Simple steps like extinguishing a campfire or keeping your vehicle maintained to prevent sparks can help prevent wildfires. #WildfireAwareness

The Dena’ina name for the summer is Ts’ek’dzelghaxi N’u or “Month We Put Up Fish.” During summer, fish camp becomes a place where folks gather with friends and family to process salmon in preparation for winter. How would you rename summer based on natural events in your area?

Fire Effects monitoring staff from NPS Alaska have recently been working to assess fuel moisture. While fire season has been slow in Alaska, measuring fuel moisture allows fire ecologists and fire managers to monitor how vegetation and duff moisture changes over the season.

Did you know lakes can provide historical fire information? NPS AK fire staff are working with Univ. of AK Fairbanks on a research project to estimate fire frequency in Denali National Park over the last 1000 years. Some lake core sediments collected were deposited ~15,000 years ago!

NPS fire staff from the Western Area Fire Management team recently worked at the historic Riley Creek backcountry cabin in Denali National Park to reduce fuels in the form of excess vegetation around the cabin. Their great work will provide protection in case of a future wildfire!
