🚨 Collapse of the land carbon sink in 2023 🚨 As the CO2 growth rate reached a record high at Mauna Loa, we set up a low-latency analysis of the carbon budget and found that plants and soils absorbed almost no CO2 last year GlobalCarbonProject Gianpaolo Balsamo arxiv.org/abs/2407.12447

The Hudson Bay Lowlands peat depth, carbon stock, ground measurements and associated datasets are now online here: doi.org/10.5683/SP3/TI… We also have wet and dry peat spectral measurements for full peat depth at 5cm interval for anyone interested.

New paper published in Nature Communications The 2023 fire season in Canada is a wake-up call: severe climate impacts on fire activity are arriving decades earlier than predicted. Building fire-resilient environments is now more critical than ever! Natural Resources CEF_CFR nature.com/articles/s4146…

Canadian wildfires in 2024 have again been extreme, resulting in the second highest annual total emissions (after 2023) in the 22 years of our #CopernicusAtmosphere Global Fire Assimilation System dataset. All insights in our latest summary: ecmwf.int/en/newsletter/…

My new research on estimating canopy height with uncertainty information based on Optical/SAR and GEDI Data over Northern Forests available on arxiv.org/abs/2410.18108 Camile Söthe @ky_rell Dominic Cyr, Alemu Gonsamo

Can we produce GEDI like canopy height for high latitude forests? Here we use C-, L-band SAR and optical data to extrapolate GEDI canopy height and propagate uncertainty. The use of seasonal data reduced error by 0.45 m and decreased bias by 1 m. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2410.18108
