The decision to pause + review implementation of the Freedom of Speech Act is a clear + welcome statement of intent to streamline regulation, supporting autonomous HE providers + the regulator itself to focus on their core missions. Read IHE's response: ihe.ac.uk/latest/news/ih…

I am quoted in THE's article on today's big news for HE. "The OfS of the future should be a more focused regulator which sets high expectations for the leadership and governance of providers, and sets a high bar for when it intervenes directly on an issue itself."

Thank you for having me! It was a great discussion. Lots of common ground on the potential for LLE if reimagined as a vehicle for driving access, employer investment + radical collaboration - but even stronger need for support + clear guidance for students, especially ages 18-21.

Great to be in Liverpool for Labour Party conference joining the debate on education, investment and growth. Billy Fury isn’t letting the rain get him down, and nor are we. If you’re around and would like a chat, message me here / LinkedIn - or just say hello if you see me!

NEW on Wonkhe: Independent HE has faced issues with registration and degree awarding powers processes for years. For Alex Proudfoot, the OfS decision to pause this statutory activity is the latest in a long line of mistakes bit.ly/49fqpSJ

Exactly - i'm a big fan of the The Office for Students (OfS) but this is an exceptionally poor decision. We need to embrace high quality new providers like Dyson & New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering, not shut up shop & close door to innovation & choice.

The Office for Students decision locks a lot of students out of support & locks many institutions into payments to partners with DAPs, now with no end in sight... The numbers in this piece are huge: 700 eligible institutions & their students locked out!

Alex Proudfoot (@alexproudfootuk) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Neil O'Brien Unfortunately there has also been a clear recent trend of fees charged by universities to their partners rising significantly. I have no doubt this will continue. OfS Registration allows switch to (more affordable) validation from subcontract, DAPs saves even more. Both blocked.

My colleagues at Independent Higher Education have been working hard on this important mental health Taskforce to ensure that the right support is available for students at small and independent providers. Pleased to see its second stage report published yesterday.
