If you want to do ambulatory assessment (e.g., EMA) in applied settings, say with patients, how many observations do you need to get a reliable estimate of a person's mean, variability, or correlation? We (Johannes Zimmermann & Florian Scharf) ran some simulations to get the answer...a🧵

Can neuroimaging predictive models survive across diverse real-world data?🧠🌎We put models to the test across 3 large-scale unharmonized datasets with over 2,800 participants. See our new work in this special issue of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

This is still one of my favorite #dataviz of all time. It shows how sensitive results are in small samples. It provides raincloud plots with N=20 (on the left) & N=500 (right). There is no difference between the two conditions other than the N.

Very excited to share new work merging some of my fave things (adolescence, 🧠imaging, carefully collected behavioral data📊, and multivariate methods) to further our neurobiological understanding of eating disorders 👉 doi.org/10.1101/2024.1… 1/n

Preprint: Using 400k memory tests & 15k brain MRIs, we find no evidence that education enhances cognitive reserve. Edu linearly related to better mem, but not less brain or cogn decline, or more tolerance to atrophy 🧵LCBC - UiO Lifebrain @UiO_LifeSci medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

Our lab studies child development using the ABCD dataset, but the conference for researchers working with this data was just postponed.Lisa Wiersch and I had travel awards and were set to present on effects of environmental risks on brain. Disheartening to see research disrupted

Our new paper with Christopher Langdon is just out in Dr Laurie K Mischley! We show that high-dimensional RNNs use low-dimensional circuit mechanisms for cognitive tasks and identify a latent inhibitory mechanism for context-dependent decisions in PFC data. nature.com/articles/s4159…

The preprint "Your Bran on Chatgpt" has gotten tons of attention. Being on a 14hr flight, I read the 100+ paper & wrote a post. TL;DR: claims are unsubstantiated. Let me know where you agree / disagree. residualinsights.com/all-hype-no-bi…

On this July 4, liberate the field from cross-sectional “mediation analysis” - check out this new paper discussing an alternative. I bet it’s an instant classic. My sense is that folks continue bad practices bc they don’t know what else to do. This helps psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-35…

1000s of studies have been published mapping neuroanatomical changes in psychiatric disorders. Can we ever converge on robust disease phenotypes? Our latest PP led by Trang Cao in a huge collab effort investigates this question... Neural Systems and Behaviour Lab
