🚨CALL TO ACTION🚨 Prisoners in Michigan have been denied access to non-English books (Spanish & Swahili specifically). Please write to Director of Michigan Dept of Corrections, Heidi Washington, to express your concerns about this language rights violation. 1/4

So sorry to say that Professor Bernard Dov Spolsky passed away on Shabbat, כ״ג אב, August 20. Impossible to express how many groups and individuals, research areas and practical tasks, owe a permanent debt to this great man.

While I appreciate the $567 remuneration for wage theft by my employer, what I really want, and what all precarious academic workers want, is job security.

Does democracy prevent language endangerment? This graph shows the relationship between how democratic a country is (based on Freedom House ratings) & the number of endangered languages it has (from ELCat). More democratic countries do not have fewer endangered languages.

REALLY EXCEPTIONAL! I'm so excited for Laura & for the attention I hope it brings to her applied, meaningful humanities research on justice & multilingualism. + I implore others to amplify Dr Laura Smith-Khan's news: colleagues and uni media ppl don't always realise how important that is.

Another real pleasure to work on. I’ve followed Dr Smith-Khan’s work for a very long time, so to write this up was lovely. Congratulations! Dr Laura Smith-Khan dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/graft…

Interesting to hear origins of this book academic.oup.com/book/43917, progress in legal practice in recent decades & room for huge further improvements in recognising many more people's experiences of harms that are international crimes & should be prosecuted. Eg by Rosemary Grey:

Costa: when you engage in language revitalization your are thinking like a state without the resources of the state. It’s a situation that is set up to fail.

Really nice to have this short summary of the work Alex and I have been doing together, and the emerging language and law speciality at UTS

@sarahshulist Also, work that is demanding, time consuming & requiring advanced expertise, yet entirely unrewarded & not paid. Particularly ironic in "open access" journals, where they expect us to work for free *and* pay for publishing in them. With rising number of journals not sustainable!
