What do handshakes and algorithms have in common? As part of a CS & LCPS Social Science & Global Studies lesson, the kindergarten students Horizon Elementary became algorithm experts as they worked together to follow the steps of 5 “Secret Handshakes” in order to learn new ways to greet people during the day.

One of the best things about my job this year is being able to collaborate with @MdotSmithTeachz and LCPS Social Science & Global Studies to create lessons that integrate computer science and social science. Loudoun County Computer Science Office Nick Grzeda Danyael Graham

Love seeing computer science being integrated into all grade levels Horizon Elementary! Way to go Comets! Loudoun County Computer Science Office Nick Grzeda Michael Grubbs

OMG! I love everything about this AND I am going to figure out a way for students to do this for upcoming social science lessons. Thanks for sharing Amanda Sandoval 💛

Happy Chomputer Science day! Thank you Shawn DeLuca for always providing us with your expertise and awesome resources for our students! #lcpscsweek Loudoun County Computer Science Office Career, Technical, & Adult Education

On Day 4 of CSEdWeek, K-5 teachers Emerick Elementary participated in Machine Learning CLTs to learn about the new ML curriculum and review their grade level lessons. It was great to see teachers engaging in programs like Google AutoDraw, Teachable Machine, and Micro:bit Educational Foundation.

K & 2nd grade Ss Horizon Elementary learned about Machine Learning from Shawn DeLuca. K Ss used Google Autodraw to identify living & nonliving things at the park while 2nd grade used Teachable Machine to create a model that identified if an animal migrates or hibernates.

K-1 Ts spent the afternoon with Shawn DeLuca & Becca Gratz rocking out to a Metallica themed PD that had them Entering the Coding Sandman & Riding the Lightning to help spark CS integration in LCPS Social Science & Global Studies. From Ozobot to Makey Makey to an air guitar competition, this PD rocked!

I love being a facilitator at this school! I was happy to work with the staff to bring their Trashion Show to life. All the models did an incredible job & the students designed super creative outfits & accessories. Michael Grubbs Nick Grzeda Career, Technical, & Adult Education LCPS News Aaron Spence

Always a blast when I get to work with the coding comets from Horizon Elementary. Everyone loved how the Micro:bit Educational Foundation could be used for so many engaging activities.
