Why hasn't the number of training spots grown in a decade? Why are non-doctors filling roles meant for doctors? Why no hiring freeze on doctors from abroad given the looming unemployment crisis? Why aren’t UK-trained doctors prioritised for training posts? Wes Streeting

Failure of workforce planning within the NHS starts for final year medical school doctors. Sort the bottle necks, even at FY1! It’s happening now. It will only get worse if the government does not act Wes Streeting

Doctors leave training because they feel unsupported & underappreciated, personal costs are unacceptable & career prospects are unattractive😭 Our new review, published this week, explores attrition from training. Lots to think about and improve šŸ¤” šŸ”—shorturl.at/X6Mx1

This is some good news for a change but the full-time equivalent number is 851 But there are 900 fewer FTE Adhoc Locums uncounted in the most recent figures But more employment is good news just 7000 more to go to reach the numbers projected as needed 2015 Thanks Wes Streeting

As a FY3 disabled doctor with epilepsy. 7 years of medical school. Tried to get into GP training unsuccessfully twice. Those doctors with disabilities training opportunities are even more sparce. The NHS employment system is broken. Please have your say & engage with this

🚨thank you to Wes Streeting for acknowledging the absolutely mental scenario of UKGs having to compete with an endless, global supply of doctors for the same training spots🚨 this will go a very long way for building positive relations with the next generation of doctors.

700 placeholders & 20k doctors not getting into training - I'm glad Wes Streeting agrees this is a problem, and we need UK med school grad priority. BMA Students Resident Doctors have asked him to do this for foundation & speciality training respecitvely; now is the time for action

ā€˜I’m a doctor but next year I won’t have a job’ In 2024, there were 12,743 training posts available, with 10,628 UK graduates and 14,868 international graduates applying Emma Morgan reports trib.al/hbbn5Sy

A national scandal is quietly unfolding in the NHS. 1000s of doctors are being blocked from becoming Consultants & GPs because the Government is restricting training spots. The public aren’t being told. Unemployed doctors while waiting lists soar is nothing short of madness.

Skilled. Exhausted. Unemployed. That should be what we are talking about. I would like to know how many doctors are currently at risk of unemployment from August/September. I know of several clinical fellow jobs receiving over 500 applications for just one post. The BMA

The BMA has warned the government that as many as a thousand GP registrars could be left without a job when they qualify later this summer unless urgent mitigation is taken bmj.com/content/389/bm…

Ngl the vibe I'm getting from most other residents is that striking for pay is not their priority. They’re more concerned about training numbers + non doctor roles. I’m sure many won’t be happy to hear this but it’s what I’ve noticed from speaking to many other residents.
