New preprint with Giovanni Colavizza et al: We use PLOS Open Science Indicators to explore if #OpenScience practices correlate with cumulative effects on citations. Sharing preprints, 20.2% increase; sharing data in a repository, 4.3%; sharing code, no effect arxiv.org/abs/2404.16171

Ch. 4 of my thesis is out! We use two fish species found in the same environment but with different evolutionary histories (one recent range expanding and one native) to show that maladaptive plasticity in gene expression could play a role in the colonization of new environments.

“Always the peer reviewer never the peer” -my partner after telling me I’ve peer reviewed more papers than I’ve published BRB I gotta go cry

So much in ecology remains exploratory And many papers are simply looking for the connections between things That forcing them to state hypotheses or specific questions is unhelpful Let’s hear it for exploratory ecology!

The informal poll results are in, & as I feared, most people are running ANOVAs in #R with functions that can give highly misleading (or flat out wrong) results. Follow along to see why using anova() and aov() is usually inadvisable & why you should be using car::Anova() 🧵

How fast can brains epigenetically respond to predation stress? We found that brain DNA methylation in guppies can shift within 30 minutes of predator exposure — with different time courses between males and females. New paper from my PhD now out! 🧠🐟 doi.org/10.1111/mec.17…
