Decided to check out the periodical Magicicada emergence while visiting central Illinois for a few days. I also tried local cicada-themed beer! Several cicadas, like this one, were infected by the Massospora cicadina fungus, as is evident by their missing abdomen.

Incredible work showing that painted lady butterflies can migrate from West Africa to South America! That's at least 4,200 km! Check it out!

Prepare to have your mind BLOWN This fly (Fannia sp) was found in the meat baited Shannon trap covered in Dermatobia hominis - The HUMAN BOTFLY Botflies usually lay eggs on flies that feed on humans (as the eggs drop when feeding) and these are larvae! #FySchool24

Very excited to see this published!! We did a global literature review of long-distance hover fly migration and found nearly 50 species that exhibit this fascinating behavior. There’s a lot of cool work out there, and also much left unknown! Check it out! #diptera Ecological Entomology

I found a 3mm black blob in the disc of a late oxeye daisy. Took it for a beetle at first, or one of those funny squat chalcid wasps, but it is neither. Meet Discomyza incurva, weird little hump-backed fly. It's another snail-killer. I learned a new word: malacophagous 🦟💚🍃

Globe skimmer dragonflies migrate from India to Africa each autumn in search of puddles to lay their eggs in. They travel over 3000km across an ocean! But what is more amazing is that tiny midges ride these dragons on their journey! 🪰🐉 New podcast: podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/willa…

Had a great time at #EntSoc24 in Phoenix! It was fun catching up with friends and talking science. I’ve been coming to these meetings for 10 years, but this is my first as a faculty!

We've just published some brand new insect migration research in iScience! We found that Marmalade hoverfly migrants are marathoners, not sprinters. Led by Richard Massy of University of Exeter Longer video: youtu.be/DevlGE68PVg?si… Full Paper: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
