The idea of aligning recommendation systems (like the one you’re on right now) with human values has recently attracted a lot of attention in industry and academia. But what does this mean? Many of the discussions on the topic are uncomfortably vague.

Over the past few months, a group of experts from multiple disciplines (including AI, policy, law, psychology, journalism, HCI) came together to make the discussion more concrete:

devise a list of human values that are relevant to recommendation systems and understand their meaning in this context, look at what it means to operationalize them, and outline some of the open technical and policy issues. The linked paper is the result of the effort.
