Are you a wildlife expert with a spare 5 minutes on the holiday weekend? My PhD student is looking for expert input into new tool to search wildlife images to understand health, behaviour, species interactions etc - Thank you! forms.gle/CmRf826AkJPkvh…

Well I’ve finally seen Boar living wild in Britain. After a few hours searching through the Forest of Dean, getting tip-offs from dog walkers, we came upon a sounder of two sows and their humbug young and watched them for over half an hour. Really chill pigs. Just magical.

Do you use #CameraTraps? Have you ever considered how the decision to place the camera in a tree or elsewhere may influence your results? 💭 This study discusses how the precision of detection rates can be improved via clustered and rotating designs 📸 🔗doi.org/10.1111/1365-2…

Great new #OA paper led by Tom Bradfer-Lawrence out in Methods in Ecology and Evolution today. Acoustic indices can be tough to interpret and use (especially for beginners), so this paper provides a clear, instructive user's manual with worked examples. Congrats Tom and all 🥳 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

How cool would it be to know in real-time if our skiing is bothering the black grouse? Now we can! Check out our latest preprint featuring an interactive tool that visualizes stress impacts on wildlife, guiding sustainable recreation in alpine environments papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

🚨New paper 🚨 We found mammal responses to recreation are species- and context-dependent. Key insights: trail density & management type influence mammal space use. Limiting trail density may reduce negative impacts journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

The wonderfully talented Amber Cowans (Amber Cowans) and Albert Bonet Bigatà (Albert Bonet Bigatà) just submitted work from their time here as Statistical Ecology MSc students. I am so impressed with the researchers they are becoming! #StatisticalEcology doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…

How much data do you need to reliably estimate statistical interactions with the Rota. et al. co-occurrence occupancy model? Turns out A LOT. Check out this pre-print led by Julie Louvrier (she/her)🇺🇦 @JulieLouvrier@ecoevo! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Huge congrats to Amber Cowans on the acceptance of her first PhD chapter in Methods in Ecology and Evolution: 'Improving the integration of AI into existing ecological inference workflows' It's perspective piece, but if you cant wait, the preprint here: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

RESULT: Diversionary feeding increased the number of hens detected with chicks, consistent with our previous work. This resulted in productivity (the expected chicks per hen) increasing from 0.82 in unfed sites to 1.9 in fed sites (more than double!). 5/6

Check out this thread by Jack to see how providing some tasty 🦌meat for marten has helped more capercaille chicks survive in Scotland by diverting predation! The food is not supplemental, but diversionary. i.e. it's not extra meals, they eat it instead of the caper eggs.
