The Budapest memorandum recognized Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in exchange for giving up nuclear weapons. It also provided security guarantees by the US, UK, Russia. Russia violated sovereignty. Security guarantees did not realize. 1/ rte.ie/news/primetime…

To recall the end of the Second World War in Europe means remembering that more Ukrainian civilians were killed than were Russians, and that more Ukrainian soldiers died fighting the Wehrmacht than Americans, British, and Frenchmen — taken together. See numbers in #Bloodlands

In light of a recent fraud case (Gino), some people are talking about how audits of the lit could help deter & detect flawed research. I agree, and as someone pointed out in a convo, they could also provide “certification” for the papers that are audited & pass. Win-win.

78% of Ukrainians have relatives or friends who have died or been wounded in the war. That’s 4 out of 5. The Russian idea of brotherly nations is gone. By Russia’s doing. The war has become personal for everyone in Ukraine. It is us vs them. 1/

What do people fundamentally misunderstand about Russia's war in Ukraine? First, it's not a local conflict, if Ukraine loses, we will all suffer greatly. Second, when people push for "peace talks" they either want to help Russia or don't understand the region geopolitics. Why?

Anatolia Batruch 🇺🇦 (@anatolia_b) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Negotiations can't work bc Russia doesn't care about territories! It ONLY wants a weak puppet state. RU wants people to insist on "peace talks" to portray Ukrainians as ungrateful/unreasonable, but a middle ground on a country democracy is de facto impossible! A half democracy?

Here’s a simple truth that many foreign political commentators can’t seem to understand about Ukrainians: Russian occupation is much worse than war for us.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine breaks the biggest taboo of the international order. Since 1945, no internationally recognized state was wiped off the map by external conquest. Russia is trying to do just that to Ukraine. Putin is following the imperial principle that any territory

Saying that Ukraine provoked Russia because it sought to join NATO is like saying that a victim of long-term abuse is to blame for the most recent attack because she was trying to get a restraining order against her abuser. Those who parrot this are either ignorant or malicious.
