THREAD: Last week the DWP said ‘advance payments’ solve the problem of waiting 5-wks for #UniversalCredit. This isn’t true. They provide a sticking plaster until a first payment comes in, but aren’t a proper solution for people waiting 5+ weeks because they need to be repaid 1/3

For those fighting today against the plagues of nationalism and irrationalism, writes Robert Zaretsky, we should remember Albert Camus’s greatest insight: while hope might well be foolish, despair is even more so. trib.al/YfPrtrY

A good insight into UK health inequalities. We need to analyse more the people and systems at the 'rich end'. Too often we just focus on, and stigmatise, people at the other end of society's scale. And so we miss the causes of the problems we see.

German academics facing the same issues as UK academics of precarity and short-term contracts #UCUstrike. (rough translation of below: no results in the job search if you search for permanent jobs). Hope we can all work together on these issues.

Good health is about decent home, love & relationships, rewarding activity, control, purpose & sense of belonging. Does ‘population health’ capture all this?

Thread on climate change: science isn't enough, it is about morality. Same for health. 'evidence based policy' isn't enough.

Think through the consequences of #behaviour. #COVIDー19 Food bank shortage blamed on panic buying. We need a society-wide shift to mindset of caring, collective, looking after those most in need, reduce not increase #inequalities bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

People sleeping rough and those dependent on drugs will be more vulnerable to covid-19. The government's lack of attempt to mitigate the risks these groups face "throws into sharp relief who we think is deserving of care and who isn’t," says Ian Hamilton ow.ly/2lVW50yNnBz

agree Pathway - we are seeing now what past arguments of unaffordabilty for action to end #homelessness always were - shallow ideology - q now of how to get current actions like Brighton & Hove City Council everywhere and build this new understanding

research with @ItsGroundswell shows how people who are homeless face massive barriers to #UniversalCredit even before #coronavirusuk. Barriers will only be higher now. Other new measures beyond increase in money for UC needed to recognise this.
