It was chaotic, but campaigners today forced the govt to postpone PIP cuts from their welfare bill. I welcome this step forward. However, I voted against the bill due to continued cuts of ÂŁbillions from the Universal Credit health element. #TakingThePIP #WelfareBill

Today’s NHS 10 Year Strategy announcement saw the adoption of a personal care plan. This will mean people with complex needs, including spinal cord injuries, will receive joined-up support tailored to their individual lives. Congrats to Spinal Injuries Association and others on their work.

Together, we elected a Labour Govt with a promise to deliver a New Deal for Working People. A year on, they are delivering on that promise: the Employment Rights Bill will soon be law, they've just published their plan to implement it - and this is just the beginning. #newdeal

Today I had a really productive meeting with staff and advisors at Citizens Advice from both Middlesbrough and Stockton offices. They were telling me some of the consequences of the universal credit and personal independence payment changes and it really was staggering.

On this day 77 years ago, Labour created the NHS.  For the first time in UK history, healthcare was free of charge to all who needed it. We will always protect it, so that it can protect you.

It was great to spend some time with M'bro Deputy Mayor Philippa Storey and staff from Middlesbrough Council looking at issues in Linthorpe. I also joined a Friends of Linthorpe litter pick. Great team effort and very satisfying to see the difference made by a wonderful group.

It is becoming increasingly clear that a wealth tax would be a popular and progressive move. I have long backed the Patriotic Millionares' argument that a 2% tax on assets over £10m could provide upwards of £24bn each year. theguardian.com/politics/2025/…
