For St. Agnes’s Eve today, here is John Everett Millais’s The Eve of St. Agnes (c. 1863), which is based on John Keats’s poem of the same name. The model for the painting is Millais’s wife, Effie Gray, who posed at night “in a freezing room” at Knole, a Jacobean house in Kent.
