Quick shift: I'm teaching surface area/volume today and was going to just do several "calculate the surface area/volume of this solid." I know that's kind of dry so now I'm doing "Which has the greater surface area/volume?" so students predict and use math to find the answer.

Great way to emphasize part-total thinking with manipulatives. Next step? Write informally using number bonds, then formally using equations. It's ALL about meaningful progressions. Missing addends are yet another reason why teaching standard algorithms too early is problematic!

If Ss can't paraphrase a math text/word problem in their own words (without the numbers), they probably do not understand it. We must teach the reading for meaning of word problems first (like we teach reading for meaning for all other texts) LONG before Ss start solving them.
