Proud and humbled to share our recent paper on Nature Communications! It's such a thrill to see the paper finally out! Huge thanks to my PI Paola Romagnani and to Elena Lazzeri How does the kidney adapt to AKI? #polyploidy #AKI #CKD 👇 nature.com/articles/s4146…

A new study from our group demonstrates that tubular cell polyploidy protects from lethal AKI but promotes consequent CKD. Just published in Nature Communications nature.com/articles/s4146…

You did a great work LetiziaDeChiara finally clarifying that the kidney after an AKI fastly recovers function by polyploidization of tubular cells but these polyploid cells later become senescent driving CKD! Thanks also to fantastic work of Elena Lazzeri

After kidney injury, polyploidization of tubular epithelial cells is the quickest way to adapt and sustain residual kidney function to assure survival Paola Romagnani Elena Lazzeri nature.com/articles/s4146…

Polyploid tubular epithelial cells become senescent in the long run driving AKI-CKD progression.. however blocking continuos tubular cells polyploidization through YAP1 inhibition or senolytic therapy is able to prevent CKD progression 👇👇👇 nature.com/articles/s4146…

Evolution selected kidney hypertrophy by tubular cell polyploidy as a fast and efficient mechanism to reduce the risk of death after AKI. Knocking out YAP1 in tubular cells blocks polyploidy and kidney hypertrophy= death for AKI nature.com/articles/s4146…

Single Cell-RNAseq on mouse kidneys after AKI and in vitro human cell culture showed that polyploidization of tubular epithelial cells depend on YAP1 activation

Using our diagnostic algorithm we changed the initial clinical diagnosis in 1/5 of patients with genetic kidney diseases. Reported in our new study in JASN bit.ly/JASN076

Thanks to Luigi Cirillo work we could establish that early use of whole exome sequencing during the diagnostic process, when applied in the context of our workflow, can even reduce the costs for diagnoses

Our new study is out! By STED microscopy on kidney biopsy and ELISA assays we show 1/3 of pediatric and half of adult patients (more in primary FSGS) have autoantibodies against slit antigens different from nephrin. i.e. anti-slit Abs kidney-international.org/action/showPdf…

Look how much more important is to know if a patient is genetic or has anti-slit antibodies than if has MCD or FSGS at kidney biopsy. We have finally come to the era of autoimmune, genetic and adaptive podocytopathies. No more MCD or FSGS used as diagnosis!
