I’m reading Ann Cleeve’s bestseller, The Dark Wives: A Vera Stanhope Novel, an engaging police procedural. The story starts with the murder of a man and a missing teenage girl, who might be the killer or a victim. A theme explores the plight of youngsters placed in group homes.

Twenty years ago I submitted a novel set in Shetland to Pan Macmillan . No advance so no guarantee of publication. The book - Raven Black - changed my career. Today a lovely new edition of the novel is published. Still one of my favourites.
