#OnThisDay, the Supreme Court delivered its unanimous decision overturning the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling as it applied to public education. Chief Justice Earl Warren called “separate but equal” facilities as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

Dr. Fenwick expertly acknowledged the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF BLACK teachers, principals, and superintendents locked out of positions and summarily demoted and fired to massively resist the Brown decision. We still feel the impact of those actions. AASA

The Brown v. Board decision was met with opposition forcing the integration of several schools, including Central High in Arkansas. In 1957, 9 Black students, known as the "Little Rock Nine," were met by hostile white people, and National Guardsmen ordered to block their entry.
