DC is full of stories like this: contracts, appointments, waived fines… There are almost always political donations behind it. DC residents pay the price with poorly-run programs and wasted public funds. But with a reduced local press, most stories never see the light of day.

"How do we rebuild local news?" Jonathan Van Ness asked Meg Heckman on their latest episode of @CuriouswithJVN. We've definitely got some ideas: rebuildlocalnews.org/solutions/ podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wha…

For what it's worth, I'm happy to talk to anyone in LA or beyond about what local governments can do (including DC's bill) to support the future of a thriving local media ecosystem.

“We have no desire to stop showing news in search.” - Richard Gingras, VP of News at Google, to Sen. Tom Umberg during a Dec. 5 informational hearing at UCLA about journalism in the digital age. That aged well. politico.com/news/2024/04/1…

Looking forward to seeing how these policies support local newsrooms and local journalists across Illinois! These policies wouldn't have happened without strong legislative champions and the support of a broad coalition of nonprofit newsrooms, newspapers and labor.

I’ve said this before, but I mean it when I say THIS is the most ambitious piece of policy supporting local news (possibly in the world?). It would tax Google, Meta and Amazon to support journalism jobs. It’s tilted toward smaller pubs. And the California Senate just passed it.

Journalists! You've got to read this letter to the editor that my son's friend got published in The Washington Post. He makes a compelling case based on audience feedback/needs, and offers potential revenue opportunities, for why WaPo should do more coverage of European soccer. 1/

My husband started watching Chimp Crazy last night. As a Missourian, it made me wonder if it was weird that I knew a family growing up that had a zebra.

Really useful report from Benjamin Toff! I can’t overstate how helpful these types of studies are to those of us advocating for state-level policy solutions. (And you know I didn’t miss the commitment to study the number of journalists in MN 👀) newsmap.umn.edu/minnesotas-loc…

This is it. To have a thriving democracy, we need thousands of thriving communities. Local news is a vital piece of what makes places thrive. I’m so excited stakeholders in almost 20 states are expressing interest in pursuing public policies to support local news in 2025.
