Playing around with brain simulation for anorexia is all well and good. But its not great for research proposals for novel treatments to justify themselves by saying existing treatments are inadequate without mentioning the landscape of clinical neglect in which they’re delivered

The false narrative that AN is all about control is deeply unhelpful because it makes people assume that the person is in control and therefore could eat and gain weight; they just don’t want to. You are never going to get people to care about that.

How revealing - the Royal College of Psychiatrists' most popular CPD module is about "discharging risky patients". In my work I've seen a desire to give up responsibility for patients with very real clinical needs. More than this - a wish to do so with a blessing.

Psychotherapy can encourage people to look for reasons why they developed AN and this can get them stuck. Better to recognise that AN is a starvation response that has hijacked your brain and know that the only way to reverse it is to reverse the starvation.

Any time I see a celeb say they struggle with overthinking or intrusive thoughts, I look up whether they’re vegan/vegetarian. The answer is almost always yes.

I wonder how many people suffer with OCD but without the compulsions for years and nobody ever knows. People have no idea that their experience is an illness (I didn’t) that can be treated. How many people are we losing because of this?

‘This is an ethically complex and distressing dilemma for all involved and can result in long-term trauma for young people.’ But no evidence for this is cited? Restraint for nasogastric tube feeding in young people with anorexia nervosa researchgate.net/publication/39…

Unfortunately some of the worst examples of the psychologisation of physical health comes from my own profession. Describing mental, neurodevelopmental, and physical health conditions as mere ‘defence mechanisms’ must be one of the worst takes on offer right now.

Rachel Aviv there are many conditions endocrine, neurologic, immune, nutritional, infectious which have been known for a long time and always need to be considered in evaluating psychiatric symptoms. See here 👇

This is such an important topic. Perhaps more guidance should be given to those HCPs who interact with pregnant women. I was praised for gaining very little weight in a twin pregnancy, nobody spotted the red flag for an anorexia relapse. We really do need to offer better advice.
