How does our brain allow us to make sense of our visual world? Work led by Oliver Contier w/ Chris Baker now out in Nature Human Behaviour provides support for a theoretical framework of behaviorally-relevant selectivity beyond high-level categorization. 🧵 x.com/OliverContier/…

A new preprint on how the development of new and comprehensive conceptual frameworks can help understand cognition. I am happy to have collaborated in its development.

New paper on emergence, by Achyuth Parola and me. We try to clarify what people might possibly mean when they invoke "emergence." We try to eliminate subjective terms about "novelty," and specify what it would take to have new ontologies at higher levels.

Beautiful event yesterday at Sapienza on the legacy of Frans de Waal. We moved from his work to how to translate it into a greater responsibility towards other living species. It served to give scholars working in Italy a coordination and a direction on this matter.

Visiting a research centre for an intellectual exchange should not have a cost for the visitor. Why, by the same logic, not remunerate the visitor for contributing to the intellectual life of an institution? Not sure the LSE is adopting a good policy. lse.ac.uk/cpnss/work-wit…

A group of scientists just put forward a new theory of consciousness, based on the idea of causal models. The authors claim boldly that their idea solves the hard problem of consciousness and explains why zombies don't exist in nature. youtube.com/watch?v=8kolJo…

It has been a long time since I have felt so involved with a specialist book. This collection of essays is excellent and tells more about consciousness than any other book on the subject of consciousness. I enjoyed it very much!

I am happy to be part of this circle. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to adding my criticisms and doubts to the field of ecological psychology 😆

I teach Chomsky and his critics in phil of lang course (Bachelor). I have more than 300 students and therefore have to examine them through a written test. I would like to ask both open and multiple-choice questions. This is the first time I am doing this. Any suggestions?

New article published that seeks to challenge reductionist & emergentist approaches. Instead, a taxonomy of strategies is proposed based on the n of components involved in analysing the brain underlying a given behaviour or psychological function. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

Participating to this conference has been so exciting. I gave a talk on embodied cognitive evolution, its promise and limitations. Ended up exchanging perspectives on many different topics and approaches, from mathematical models to the biology and ethology of emergence. A blast!

How can emergent embodied views of the mind inform our understanding of cognitive evolution? To me, while embodied accounts show promise, they must do more. E.g.,They need clearer accounts of how bodily features shape mental capacities across species and developmental stages.
