A 1,000,000th reminder the crucial importance of basic research. Ambros and Ruvkun were looking into understanding nematode genetics and development, not looking for a drug, and ended up opening an entire new area in biology

It has probably been overdue but doesn’t reduce the excitement: Ambros and Ruvkun performed their seminal discoveries on #microRNAs in the ‘90s, parallel to Fire and Mello’s discovery of #RNAi (Nobel 2006) - altogether unraveling an incredible new world in the cell. #RNA rocks!
