This is very interesting. You dont see many blogs by art teachers from the knowledge rich end of things, so I'm looking forward to reading more of Antonia's articles.

It's the same with jazz improvisation. You've got to know your scales, modes and chord progressions to be able to consciously, and convincingly, depart from these rules. There's even a list of 'standards' - the jazz canon - that you're expected to know. Really chimes w/ this blog

So many art lessons seem to have children drawing from photographs - this is really worrying! The real world doesn't behave like a photo - when you move your head you get parallax and you understand the form of things much better - this needs to be taught!

This is so, so good. What a beautiful example of a deeply knowledgable teacher breaking down a final performance into its building blocks, teaching these explicitly, and providing continuous guidance to pupils, all as a way of unlocking true awe and wonder. Brilliant stuff.

I love this blog. I wish we did more of this kind of sharing, explicitly laying out how we teach a subject, it's fascinating.
