So lucky RSPB England at Fowlmere owns the headwaters of precious #chalkstream, River Shep, trib. of the Cam. WHY is this gin-clear, trout-filled loveliness permitted to turn into the shame of Cambridge further downstream x.com/numenini/statu…? #MySwim #MarchForCleanWater 1/7

Catastrophic news for England’s precious chalk streams‼️DEFRA abandons chalk stream recovery plan‼️We need an holistic approach not only addressing raw sewage overflows but all pressures eg phosphorus discharge and water abstraction etc to fix our rivers chalkstreams.org/2024/11/02/the…

Working through the documents for the Cambourne to Cambridge busway. Run-off from the busway is to be discharged into Bin Brook - a chalk stream - which the report says could impact its ecological quality.

There are ~ 40 motorway outfalls into the tributaries at the top of the River Douglas catchment in Lancashire. Together, they drain about 157 hectares of motorway surface into the River. That's 470 tonnes of toxic sediment every year 😪 #StormwaterPollution #ToxicHighwayRunoff

Rivers are getting a much worse battering because water companies won't sort their networks and the regulators won't make them.

Some stills of the Old Carr Stream Brown Trout & woody debris under which they find their lairs. Even in bright sun of a winter's day, a torch still needed to investigate such caves. Mostly the trout seem unfazed by sharing their habitat, & stay put as I carry on upstream. 4/11

Old Carr Stream could be among Norfolk's finest #chalkstreams if its course was restored along wiggly parish boundary thro Old Carr, instead of brutal dead straight diversion beside arable field, source of the silt problem downstream. Upstream of field blissfully silt free. 15/15

Last w/e, water of the poor River Lark looking grim (unlike Norfolk #chalkstreams) at Bury St Edmunds Abbey Gardens & all way down to Temple Bridge where informative sign installed near new growth of Celery-leaved Buttercup (thankfully not invasive Floating Pennywort). #MyWalk

Amazed a week ago, swimming up from Boughton Fen, to discover these fabulous forests of Water Violet (Hottonia palustris) filling a ditch, which I think's actually a #chalkstream, perhaps arising in Barton Bendish Fen, parallel to Stringside/Lode Dike which it joins. #MySwim 1/14

Almost exactly 3 years on, swam up Lode Dike aka Stringside Stream, from confluence with the River Wissey. It is still as pitifully grim & lifeless as it was then. Only 2 fish - pair of Threespine Sticklebacks in 850m! x.com/numenini/statu… #MySwim #Chalkstreams #Norfolk 1/5
