A wee BIG DIG is coming to the The Govan Stones ๐ก๐. On Sat 11th and Sun 12th March, YOU can take part in an archaeology dig in Govan Old's 1,500-year-old graveyard, as we look for early medieval carved stones from the Viking-Age Kingdom of Strathclyde. Details: fb.me/e/8FdSHxIIY

The brill Gravesight Photography took amazing photos of the ongoing dig in the incredible survival that is our *early medieval* graveyard at Govan Old โช๏ธ Join Prof Stephen Driscoll' FREE tour de trench TODAY (Sat 9th) at 2pm to learn about one of the greatest archaeological sites in Europe

๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ โ๏ธ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด-๐๐ด๐ฒ archaeology from the early medieval Kingdom of Strathclyde has been rediscovered as we reopen Prof. Stephen Driscoll's Time Team trench from 1996. This is part of the 10th-century monumental roadway from church to Doomster Hill!

It's not every day you see a roadway last stood on in the Viking Age, but that's precisely what we were privileged enough to do today in the early medieval churchyard at Govan Old, once the religious home of the lost early-medieval Kingdom of Strathclyde and now of The Govan Stones ๐ก๐.

Tell your friends about the FREE Galloway Hoard talk this Thursday 14th at 4:30pm with Dr. Martin Goldberg of National Museums Scotland. The religious centre of Viking-Age Strathclyde is an ideal venue to think about the hoard, deposited c.900, so is contemporary with our C10th roadway!

Come see the Govan Warrior, the newly-discovered early medieval carved stone of exquisite quality that's causing international excitement. On display at Govan Old today until 4:45pm. FREE ENTRY, as always. It's also the last day of GlasgowDoorsOpenDays!

#DYK the Govan-Partick bridge towers over the site of an ancient Clyde fording point? This was before it was deepened and stone-lined during the Industrial Revolution. Future The Govan Stones ๐ก๐ visitors will recreate the walk of Strathclyde royalty from their Partick estate to Govan โช๏ธ
