Today, the Legislative Asian Caucus held a press conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of Southeast Asian refugees — including Hmong, Lao, Vietnamese, and Cambodian communities — arriving in Wisconsin.

I spoke on the Assembly floor last week as we passed a resolution marking 50 years of the strength and resilience of the Hmong, Lao, Cambodian, and Vietnamese communities in Wisconsin. Now let’s address the issues they face.

This is great news, but we could be doing even more to bolster Wisconsin’s workforce. My budget would have restored collective bargaining rights and prevailing wage protections, repealed right to work, and bolstered protections for workers. Instead, Republicans gutted it.

Since 2007, Wisconsin has lost more than half of its child care providers. Today, over half the state—and nearly 70% of rural areas—qualify as child care deserts, with three or more children competing for every available slot.

When we invest in our child care industry, we invest in our children, our workforce, and our future. This should be a no-brainer.

I am proud to join my Democratic colleagues in introducing legislation to Fund Child Care in Wisconsin. We need to make sure that working families across our state are able to access high-quality and affordable child care. Let's get this done!
