It has been a week of #glacialarchaeology that we will never forget❤️Incredible finds, melting ice and a great adventure. Today our packhorses arrived. We are heading back to civilization for a hot shower and a day of rest. Then it is on to the next site. No rest for the weary🙂

What a beauty!❤️❤️ A Viking arrow was lost in the snow. The shaft and sinew disappeared, but the iron arrowhead remained. Occasionally, surface melt would reach it, but when heated by the rays of the sun, it would melt further down into the ice. There it stayed, until... today❤️

Oh, look at the preservation of this 1400-year-old arrow❤️ Frozen in time... From the same site as the Stone Age arrow posted two days ago. As is normally the case on our sites, we have artifacts from different time periods melting out at the same time #glacialarchaeology

The fletching of a c. 1500-year-old arrow ❤️ Melted out at 2000 meters in the Jotunheimen Mountains. This will give us the possibility of identifying the bird species, using ancient DNA 🙂 #glacialarchaeology

When you find ancient horse dung covering the ice surface of your site, after another meter of ice has melted away 😳 Who were the many humans and animals that crossed the ice here long ago, and where were they going? Where are we heading? #climatechange

Wow! 😍 Got this photo from a mountain hiker. Yesterday, we surveyed the find spot and collected the leather object, together with textile and horse dung melting out of the ice. Looks like another mountain pass ❤️ Not sure what the object is. A shoe? #glacialarchaeology

What an extreme melt year in NW Greenland!? 😟 Zero (!) snowcover means that Anders ⚓ Bjørk and I can readily collect pre-Little Ice Age plants recently re-exposed by glacier melt.

This week the #uibgeo #uibgfi #iEarth interactive online course #SDG213 on causes and consequences of climate change goes offline with Jostein Bakke & AtleNesje for a day in the field exploring #climatehazards and the impact of extreme events along the fjords of western Norway

#klima

This is the Juvfonne ice patch as it looks now. Still a lot of last winter snow. Old ice is just appearing in the center. The weather forecast shows cold temperatures, snow and heavy winds in the coming days and this means that our field season is over. Photo: Liss M. Andreassen
