Together we mourn the passing of Pope Francis today, Easter Monday. I’m blessed to have witnessed his last public appearance yesterday at St Peter’s. He will be remembered as a Pope that wanted to be among the people, even in his final hours.

And so it begins. I was with Cardinals this morning at mass before they entered the conclave to start voting on who will be the next leader of the Catholic Church. Australians will be following with interest, as will many millions around the world.

As Cardinals cast their ballots on a second day, we are hosting a “conclave watch” event at our Embassy while we wait for white or black smoke to emerge from the Sistine Chapel. Great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and exchange views at this historic moment.

Best of luck to Go-Jo, the Australian entry to Eurovision 2025, at the semifinal tonight. My team and I had so much fun meeting “the Milkshake man” in Rome a few weeks ago. Do us proud, Go-Jo! 🇦🇺#Eurovision2025

Honoured to attend the inaugural Mass and meet His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, who is in the prayers of Australia’s five million Catholics today.

The last time an Australian Prime Minister had a Papal Audience was almost 16 years ago. Today's Audience between His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and Prime Minister Albanese is an important moment in Australia's history and our enduring relationship with the Holy See.
