Almost 50 years since he helped birth a new nation, I have come to Wewak to pay respects to the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. This is my first trip outside of Port Moresby as 🇦🇺 High Commissioner to 🇵🇬, and one of my most important. Thank you to the Somare family.

Australia will always be a reliable partner to the Pacific, and that starts with listening and working together. I met with Prime Minister Rabuka in Fiji ahead of the G7 to reaffirm that commitment. At the G7, I’ll work with world leaders on issues that matter to our region -

Friendly competition, fantastic sportsmanship, & a whole lot of singing. Great to host the inaugural PacificAus Sports Cricket Invitational women’s teams today with reps from 🇼🇸, 🇻🇺 & 🇵🇬 alongside our 🇦🇺 Indigenous team. Thanks to Cricket Papua New Guinea for hosting the series!

Wrapping up the day as the guest of Prime Minister Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders’ Summit. I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen and engage with Melanesian leaders.

It’s great to be back in Port Moresby. And even better to be with Hon. Justin W Tkatchenko MP, my good friend and PNG’s Foreign Minister. It’s my 10th visit to PNG in the last two years - and I look forward to discussing all things NRL and the Australia-PNG Business Forum and Trade Expo too.

PNG’s entry into the NRL is about more than sport. It’s a powerful chapter in our partnership. And both Prime Minister James Marape and I can’t wait to see it happen. Bring on 2028!
