A lot of eucalypt forests naturally limit bushfires if they're allowed to mature. We worked out how they do it, and how we can tap into that to mitigate fire risk. 1/6 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…

📉 #Antarctic winter: blue lines are the extent of sea ice every year since 🛰️ records began. Red line is this year, up to early June. The gap is currently equivalent to the area of New South Wales. 🚨 Statement from World Meteorological Organization at tinyurl.com/2p9pnp5f Graph: Phil Reid, Bureau of Meteorology, Australia

For a talk, I updated the remaining carbon budget figure from GlobalCarbonProject based on a recent publication from Piers Forster and colleagues. If CO₂ emissions continue like 2022, on January 2024, we'll have 5.25 years to use up the remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C.

Excellent analysis of the state of play in our understanding of the #AMOC by Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf 🌏 🦣 — its behaviour in the distant and recent past, and the potential for passing a tipping point to collapse in the future 👇👇👇

And finally, the OECD Climate Tipping Points Report also states it very clearly. Don't take my word for it. I really hope that those playing down tipping point risks have studied the evidence carefully enough to know what they are talking about. 🧵34/end

Donned my lab coat 🥼 to join Dr Plummer in the lab this week on his newly minted ice core CFA system. He put me to work sampling for cosmogenic 10Be for later measurement ANSTO. Takes me back!

We know from DBCA records and from fire behaviour science that burning tingle forest undermines the natural processes that keep its fire risk low. Sign the petition here to stop the next burn. chng.it/gHqkYV79 via @ChangeAUS

The long traverse to Little Dome C rolled out of Casey Station today. Wishing the team a safe and successful journey. Ice core drilling is postponed this season due to COVID impacts. But we still aim to progress traverse and deliver equipment to LDC for the long term project.

After re-anchoring the drill on the cable tonight we got back to drilling, but not before fixing some other minor issues. Those not involved in drill reparation had the chance to visit our Australian neighbors for coffee and cookies Million Year Ice Core 📸antarctica.gov.au
